With a strong swirling wind and Taylormade R9 SuperTri driver greens quicker than we have previously seen at Augusta, Dennis Paulson unexpectedly held the lead after the difficult first day with a four under par 68 where only nine players finished under par.

Paulson, 38 and a Masters rookie, Golf clubs thought that not knowing your way around like some of the veterans was a better plan in today’s frustrating conditions. "Maybe it's better not knowing how hard this course can be when the wind is really blowing," he said. "You'll do things not realising how difficult a shot is."

1994 Masters runner up Tom Lehman looked like the only man in the field who knew what he was doing around the National standing at five under par after seventeen holes with everything under control, so it seemed. But the uphill 18th stole two shots back from him when his drive found the pine straw between the tenth and last holes. Lehman’s double bogey six ruined an otherwise faultless performance.
