I really did have a disastrous situation with a contractor, and after that, two great ones, a so-so result, and two other good ones.
Then I heard all the horror stories. They were about that first contractor, and then about many, many more. Now I don't expect Associations or Boards to be perfect, but I guess I am naïve enough to expect them to respond in a professional manner. The local association decided this contractor should remain as a member. And that he should stay on their Board of Directors. It was only after a few other complaints, two lawsuits and a filing against his bond that his membership was revoked. The State Contractor’s Board dutifully took my written complaint, then rather than respond in writing, left me a telephone message stating that the contractor had denied everything over the phone, so they were closing their file. Four other complaints finally resulted in some “disciplinary action”. I already had given up.
Was it just me? Was I too foolish or trusting for this dog-eat-dog business?
What do you think? Are contractors generally more likely to mess you up? Are contractors really a breed apart? |
