After surviving moderation of a few serious online fights, I've learned that the same techniques I use to calm an upset client can be applied to forums. Try to recognize each person's intended message and gently point out your understanding of BOTH sides. Be creative with your own criticism or identification of a rules violation by sandwiching your comment between two positive remarks about a member.
What else works for you to settle an online brawl? |

I usually tried to avoid getting directly involved in the discussion. Moderators must remain neutral. Depending on the forum rules, you can remind the posters involved in the argument to contain themselves so as not to get banned.
I also used to suggest that losing one's temper in an argument is a sure sign that you are losing the fight. |

| When it comes down to a argument on a forum the one thing to always remember is to be a neutral 3rd party. Try to hear both sides of the argument and then make a informative decision based solely on facts. |
