If I have written an article, can I use part of it in another article?
For example, if I wrote an article on Arts Management Schools in Omaha, can I use part of that for an article on Arts Management Schools in Salt Lake City?

| I wouldn't do it. The articles are all supposed to be 100% original content. I think I saw the ones you're referring to- they're SEOs right? If that's the case, then don't use anything close to the same content. You know with an SEO you can take the article in any direction you want to right? As long as you use the key words. |

Absolutely not. All content written here must be 100% original and brand spanking new. The content you write goes up on various web sites... what if both of your similar pieces popped up under the same search engine results? You'd have a whole lot of legal trouble on your hands, that's what. Write fresh, every time.  |

Why would there be legal trouble? It's not a crime to reprint your own material. And anything written by an author is copywritten the moment it's published. Even if we are selling the material, we are only licensing the use of it, not selling the rights to ownership. |

Actually we are selling the rights and the ownership of the writing. A while back when I logged into my content writing page I had to click on an agreement saying that when I submitted my articles they were no longer my own, and I couldn't use them anywhere else on the internet or for personal use. (portfolio, etc...) That's the short version of the agreement anyway. |

I have been looking around the forum and have found some useful information. This topic of new content interests me, I have written many articles and have posted some online. However, if I was to re-post something to a new site I always get permission.
I believe that people are seeking fresh information, they are not wanting to read the same thing at different web sites. However, they are wanting to find a fresh aspect of the same topic. So re-posting an article at several sites is like repeating yourself.
Now I do think there is an exception to the rule, as I run several web sites, and I send out many newsletters. These newsletters are sometimes repeats because I know how crowded in-boxes can get and things get deleted. Plus if a reader has all ready read the newsletter it refreshes them on the subject .
Therefore, all in all I truly think that an article is meant to be new and exciting, not old and repetitive... |

I grant you, I'm exceedingly new here. I haven't even sent in my application to become a booster yet. That said, I certainly wouldn't suggest recycling any of your material between articles.
What if the person who wanted an article written for this subject in Omaha was a different person than the one who wanted an article focused on Salt Lake City? It would be embarrassing, and potentially lead to legal difficulties, should these two different customers have such strikingly similar articles written on nearly identical subject matter. For you, it would look unprofessional (in my opinion) to essentially try and sell the same article twice.
As others have said, others who are far more experienced in this field then myself no doubt, all the content you're submitting in this line of work should be 100% original. I know that sounds terribly daunting. Still, it can be accomplished, and should be striven for. |
