I think it is definetely the interaction of forum staff (both admins and moderators) in the community but not in a way that feels as if they are forcing conversation. I also believe having an unpredictable forum will definetely make people feel like retuning. One thing that worked for me was the regular running of polls which can start long debates. One time on April fools day I started a poll saying should the forum be renamed to the 'ravingmoronsinaforumontheinternethavingagoodtime (dot) com in a forum I have now sold and recieved more posts in the following week than I had ever ahd in two years. Laughing

What do you think? Has anyone ever tired competitions?

I think that now a days there are to many forums, I am pretty active in the web hosting & design business. I am a member on about 20 forums.
Most of them are as good as dead.
One of those forums gave away a 50gb reseller, so that people could sell there own web hosting. You had to be the first one to make 300 posts.
Well, the forum was very busy for a week, over 300 people signed up.
The day they gave away the free reseller, the forum was dead.
I posted some posts on the last vew days, but no one replies, not even the staff.

That is definetely the problem. You have good activity whilst its happening but when theres nothing left to win it is dead.

one of the best way to have more conversation going is by adding some offers and promotions in forum. You can also add some virtual currency which members earn by posting. This will encourage them to post more

I think that link exchange is the way to go. I have had a lot of success with this and it has brought a lot of traffic to my website. Great idea that everyone should try.
