Is there a way to restrict random people (other than registered members) from viewing my forums?

Basically what I want is for only those people that register and log in to be able to read the forums.

What type of forum is it? phpbb, invision, vb?

In your control panel you can set your forum permissions.

Indeed. You should be able to specific that some or all of the forums can only be seen y members. Although it pays to leave at least on public with an explanation for new members. I do think that this will also lock out the google bots though?

Not sure about the google bot, but I think you can set them up by making a robot text instruction for them. More info on google specific bot text can be found at their website.

If your trying to expand your forum it would be best to have it viewed by everyone. Further more when you're expanding it might be a good idea to allow 'guest' posting for a temporary time allowing people to test out your forum and its dynamicness (that's not even a word, but I'm hoping you get my drift)

Also another idea to encourage people to register is to allow different kinds of permissions, signature goodies, avatars, etc. This makes people feel more involved and special.

If you are using a Vbulletin software as your Forum then you have hacks that provide this facility....

This hack will limit guest viewing by the number of Posts you have Specified in your Admin control Panel and After the guest has viewed the Max number of posts allowed he will be asked to REGISTER...

This is a Good Hack instead of Forum Permissions....

I use it on my forum and it improves Forum registration Rates

That would be considered having a private forum right? I think that it would be more beneficial if you were to leave your forum open to the public. But I mean it all depends on what you are trying to do i guess.Because you get some people who come onto your forum and just spam their little hearts out.

If you have phpBB this is very easy to do, just go to the admin panel > Permissions , there you got anything you need Smile.

The easiest way to accomplish your goal is by making your forum private. It may not help your forum grow, but it will prevent visits by casual viewers.

Of course you can have some parts of the forum open to general public, some private, & some even 'extra private' (invitation-only, password-only, or 'approved by moderator' of the specific sub-forum/usergroup).... Probably depends on the forum software you use too, yeah...

The idea posted by Yash seems very interesting too!! Smile

Maybe you can try a combination of them all, & see what works best-?
