if you don't have money to adertise your website you can do link exchanges, submit your website/forum do free directories.
If you have money you can buy some links on related websites, you can also buy forum signatures, submit to paid directories and start an adworks campaign.
also you can pay some forum posters so your forum will look more active.

In my experience, directories haven't provided any traffic. I've heard numerous accounts in which directories were virtually useless.
Some good ways to advertise forums are via signatures, buying adspace on webpages, dropping links here and there, and link exchanges. These have proved useful in the past and continue to prove useful. |

There are a LOT of article directories now, and I think they are somewhat effective. You get a link from those sites and if someone else makes a copy of your articles they are also supposed to link to you as well.
In my opinion (As a SEO consultant) the best thing you can do is submit your site to search engines (the ones that don't spider) and directories. True, many may not send you much traffic but they do provide an easy link. If you submit to the smaller sites, you help them grow and if they stay alive they may someday provide you with more traffic. We have a list that we submit our clients to and we can easily submit to about 180 places. We also give this list away and if you send me a PM I'll give you the URL(I just registered today so I don't want to seem like I'm advertising.).
The other thing that works pretty well are blogs. Put a blog on your site, make it nice and post some good content daily or 2-3 times week and I think you will find it boosts your traffic somewhat. If you have a forum you could post about posts and people can use RSS to keep tabs on what's going on and you can let them know when some important stuff is being discussed (or flamed) about. |

Getting reciprical or one-way links to your website or forum is a great way to increas your SEO (Search Engine Optimization). I run three websites and am constantly working on the SEO. Content, of course, is important. That's why programs like ForumBooster exist, right?
I have submitted my websites to directories but I don't know how much it has helped. I rarely get any actual traffic from them, but I figure they can't hurt. _________________ Melanie |

according to me the best traffic diverter is google and the best way to keep all your pages listed on it is google sitemap.
create your sitemap with auditmypc.com and submit it to www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login it really works. In the last 2 month it has increased my traffic to +3.
building your meta tags good and informative and that way keeping your rank high on search engine is best to earn zero expense traffic. |

| Get a good set of meta tags and put your forum in all the search engines you can find. Even if it involves false advertising it'll bring in some form of traffic. |

I have to disagree with billz015. Even if you're OK ethically with "false advertising," your potential forum members won't be. I can say for certain that any site that lured me in with inappropriate meta tags, such that the thing I was searching for is something they actually have nothing at all to do with, is a site I won't be returning to. _________________ Nicole J. | The best way I've found is simply to get good content and users. Word of mouth is the best way to spread the word about your forum, bar none. |

| Directories are worthless for bring in traffic. It is alright for gaining backlinks but besides that I would not waste my time with directory submissions. The best way to increase traffic is to concentrate on getting your site listed high in Google. Sadly that can take a while so in the meantime one should do some social bookmarking and post their link all over the web through signatures with catchy titles to make people want to click your link. |
