| Do smileys do a great deal on forums? I mean there people who loves smileys and at the same time hate it. Are these little faces important in every forum or they are just a part of a forum? |

usually always part of the forum and in my opniion it is a great deal..for the people that hate them, then don't use it
however, for people who enjoy them they can express their feelings like this
i ate a cookie
YOU GAYLORD
i didnt do it!
etc |

After several years of online posting and chatting (I'm a single mom- the internet IS my social life ), I find that the smilie faces are simply another form of punctuation for me. I rely on them to get across some finer nuances with my writing, such as sarcasm. I find them very useful, though I do tend to pay attention to whether or not they are bothering others. And, though I am often astounded by some of the things I find online, I try not to get carried away |

Smileys are just a part of forums but their use can help in making your post look beautiful and attractive. Presentation is important almost everywhere. _________________ ~:: Lavanay Bhadwal ::~ |

I've found that using the smilies in forums can help to get your real point across. For example, if you're trying to make a joke that could be taken the wrong way or risks offending someone, using an emoticon will clearly indicate that you're not to be taken seriously in that case.
With no body language in the written word, it's easy for misunderstandings - the smilies help a little bit in that arena.
And of course it's always nice to be able to illustrate exactly how you're feeling, especially in this case:
The thing that drives me bonkers is when someone replies to posts with just a smilie and no text. |

A good point. This is a far from perfect medium for communicating and sarcasm, irony and humor are examples that are commonly missed. Sometimes this can lead to simple misunderstanding but on other occasions real offence can be taken.
Smilies do help but it is worth noting that not all browser setting permit them, especially those that are animated.
